Jose Marti
Poet and Independence Maker

Jose was born on January 28, 1853 to a Spanish general of garrison and Canary Islands which was his wife.  Rafael María Mendive convinced his parents to have his Jose attend and study at a secondary school. He later attended, the Instituto de Havana from 1866 to 1869 where he worked on the underground periodicals "El Diablo Cojuelo" and "La Patria Libre." Marti was arrested at the age of 16 for subversion and sentenced to six years at hard labor in a chain gang. In that same year he was exiled to Spain. While in prison he wrote a poem, this poem challenged the newly-born Spanish Republic to allow Cubans to establish their own democratic government on the island. once his sentence was over He went to University of Madrid (1873) and University of Saragosa. He received a degree in law in 1873, and a degree in philosophy and letters a year later. In Spain he published El presidio de Cuba in 1871. Before his death he went back to Cuba 3 times. In 1875 he moved to Mexico. in Mexico he wrote for Revista Universal. He then went on to teach literature and philosphy at the University of Guantamala. Then he once again returned to Cuba there he worked in a law office. In 1879 he deported back to spain. Because he was very political he was not welcome most places. For the last years of his life he lived in the U.S. and he traveled. in 1894 he had a revolutionary party trying to set Cuba his birth place free from spain. He then died a year later on May 19, 1895.

He contributed to today by making Cuba independant. He was not a solider, but he is still is in hearts everywhere. This was his goal since he was 16. To allow Cuba to have a democracy without slavery. Most of his poems tells us of this passion for setting Cuba free. Today in Havana they named there airport after him. Also they celebrate January 28th(Jose's Birthday)every year.  A song called “Guantanamera” has same of his verses in song.
